Our Dairy Cows

Certified Organic A2 Purebred Jersey and Dexters

After our first season raising pigs, we had a purebred Jersey cow join our farm family. But cows are like potato chips, you can't just have one. Now we have a few Jersey cows and a small herd of Dexter cows for beef.

Teaching milking

The cows help to keep our pasture areas well mowed and fertilized. Having dairy cows on the farm adds to our diversity and self sustainability. We haven't had to mow our lawn since they arrived all those years ago!

We use the milk on farm to feed our family, provide cream for golden butter, and the skim milk and whey from cheese making goes to our heritage hogs. Since our first cow arrived, we can now supply our home with many wonderful foods: Cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt, kefir, mozzarella, feta, Chource, Coloumier, cheese curds, and Cheddar.

All of our dairy cows have been genetically tested and are A2 cows. You can learn more about why A2 milk is important here. The average butterfat content on our cows is over 5%. The butterfat is so high, that in the winter when it's very cold, grains of butter begin to form in the milk bucket!

We offer basic dairy courses to both farmer and urbanite alike. In a hands on workshop format, we can teach you basic cow care and milking, milk handling basics, and how to make simple foods like butter, sour cream, yogurt and kefir.

We also occasionally have breeding stock or milking cows available to sell.
